Lost in Dubai. Found in Zurich.

These small devices are typically linked to keys, wallets, luggage and laptops. They can also be placed on items like cameras, speakers, remotes, cars, and pets. Smart trackers connect to your smartphone, making finding your stuff is quick and easy. Most smart trackers use a mobile app and a physical device to link your stuff to your phone.   It works just like a person looking for lost things – but better.

It works in 3 simple ways:

  • Ring your things.

If you misplace something nearby, use the app to make your smart tracker ring and you can locate it by sound in seconds.
Some devices like Tile, work the other way too! You can press Tile to make your phone ring—even if it’s on silent.

  • See where you had it last.

If you’ve lost something farther away, the app remembers the last place you had it. Check the app’s map for its last known location and time—it can even give you directions.

  • Ask others to help.

Still can’t find your smart tracker? Expand your search using all apps in the smart tracking device’s community. Bluetooth smart trackers rely on the power and density of their user’s network to help you find your tracker when it is out of your range. The bigger the network, the more powerful the searching power.

The feature is 100% private, so no one knows you’re looking for a lost item but you. This extends the range of 30 metres by crowdsourcing your favourite things. The best Bluetooth tracking devices are the ones with the largest network to increase the finding power of your stuff.

Choose your smart tracker.

As long as you’ve got a smartphone, tablet or other Bluetooth-enabled device with your music on it, you should be fine with almost any of the smart trackers you’ll find on the market.

Most smart trackers fall into 2 different categories, Bluetooth vs. GPS, and vary greatly in price.

Bluetooth tracker: Best for use with everyday items

Bluetooth trackers are best for use with everyday items, like your keys, purse, luggage, and laptop. Bluetooth trackers will work at a longer range as long as there’s a large network and longer battery life. Bluetooth tracking devices use Bluetooth Low Energy technology, which is limited to a 30 metre range, therefore making it available at a very affordable price point.

We love the Tile since it offers a hassle-free non-replaceable battery for a year and a simple to use app. The non-replaceable battery enables it to be water-resistant to IP5 standards. While scuba diving is out of the question, rainy days won’t pose a problem. Its tiny speakers let out a 90 decibel melody that’s easy to hear—even if it’s under piles of laundry or in a few rooms over. Tile also has a large community of users that increases the finding power of your Tile beyond the 30 metre range.

GPS Trackers: Best for use while on the go.

GPS is best for longer range with real-time updates, but the price point is higher.

How is a Bluetooth tracking device different from a GPS tracker?

Smart trackers either use Bluetooth Low Energy or GPS technology to locate your items. Bluetooth Low energy pairs your device to your phone, which has an extended range of about 100 feet and consumes minimal energy. Because of this, Bluetooth based trackers can last up to one year without ever having to be charged. In comparison, GPS based trackers find the location of your items no matter where they are. However, they are more expensive, typically require a monthly subscription, and have a larger form factor and a battery life ranging between one and five months.
